Number Cruncher 2 – A great game ruined

Number Cruncher is an addictive and fun game in which you make chains of numbers to get points. Combines the best of colour matching games with sudoku influences.

At least that’s how it was. Today, Tuesday, November 22, 2011, I upgraded my Number Cruncher from 1.1.5 to the new 2.0 without checking the reviews on AppWorld. Big mistake! While features like BBM integration, including real-time head-to-head play, and league play (only in the paid for Pro version) are great, they ruined the game with a new scoring system, and for free users ads and a rule change. Also there are several reviews where people have had the game freeze or run very slowly. Oh and they don’t tell you in the description on AppWorld that there is a separate paid version. There is a comment in “Product Details” that states “*Contains items for sale*” but that is at the very bottom and the fact that parts are crippled should be in the summary. The End of an Era – Steve Jobs – 1955-2011

October 5, 2011 was the end of an era. Apple announced that their co-founder, former CEO, Steve Jobs passed away.

He has left his mark on society in a big way. You can hardly go anywhere without seeing his influence on daily life. Turn on any computer and you’re greeted by a screen that owes a lot to Steve Jobs and Apple. Apple was the first major computer manufacturer to have a graphical user interface in regular use instead of a text based interface. Windows, and all linux distributions owe something to Steve Jobs and apple.

Then we look at mobile technology, Steve Jobs was smart when he took Apple into the mobile market with the likes of the iPod and then the iPhone and iPad. Now you can’t go anywhere without seeing an iPhone. The iPhone’s influence is noticable with increased use of touchscreens, just take a look at the new line up of BlackBerrys from RIM, even the Bold 9900 has a touchscreen.

Steve Jobs you will be missed by all.

Jobs in Motion: Review

“It’s never been easier to stay connected about career opportunities at Research in Motion, the maker of BlackBerry® and PlayBook®. With the new JobsInMotion app you’ll now access to the tweets, Facebook posts and job search tools and alerts all on your smartphone!

With the ability to search career opportunities by keyword, job title or even your current location, you’ll have the ability to store your search history, mark job searches as favorites and even receive automated alerts based on your interests.”

That’s how JobsinMotion is described in BlackBerry App World. From that description it sounds like a great app for anyone who wants to find out what careers are available at RIM. So with all of the above in mind and completely ignoring the large number of negative reviews and 1 or 1 1/2 stars in App World, I promptly downloaded and installed it on my 9700.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 & 9810 Impressions

I was entering a contest to win my choice of new BlackBerry 7 device on CrackBerry.com so I took my wife down to the local Rogers store to get her impressions and choice of which she would prefer. I was going in with the thought of the Torch 9810 as being my next BlackBerry. My reasoning for that was, I figured the 2.8″ screen on the Bold was a waste as a touchscreen and I personally liked the ability to choose between a virtual keyboard and physical keyboard. However I do love the standard BlackBerry form factor. Read the rest of this entry »

BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 Rogers Release Dates

The new BlackBerry Bold 9900 is officially available today, Aug 10 at a Rogers store near you. If you are looking for a larger touchscreen, you will have to wait until the Torch 9810 slider comes out on Aug 12. Reports have it that some stores were selling the 9900 a day earlier, but most were holding out until the official day.

I will post my impressions of each device as soon as I can get my hands on one.
